Sippin’ on straight chlorine: Blue Jackets 6, Blackhawks 5

The Blackhawks lost to the Blue Jackets in the first game of the set, 6-5 on Thursday. Chicago had a pair of two-goal leads throughout the game but gave up four goals in the third period in the loss.

A Nicolas Beaudin turnover on the power play led to the Blue Jackets’ first goal of the game as Cam Atkinson scored shorthanded. It was the first shorthanded goal the Blackhawks allowed this season.

Ian Mitchell scored a doorstep goal to start the second period and tie the game. It’s his first NHL goal:

Beaudin scored his first NHL goal 56 seconds later to make it 2-1 in favor of the Blackhawks:

Pius Suter picked up his NHL rookie leading sixth goal to extend the lead later in the period:

Jack Roslovic scored on the power play for Columbus before the second period was over, however.

The Blackhawks received a power play to end the second period and it carried over to start the third. Patrick Kane would score on that power play 29 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-2:

Boone Jenner would cut into the lead for Columbus on the power play. Eighty seconds later, Roslovic scored his second goal of the game to tie the game up.

Alex DeBrincat would get the lead back for the Blackhawks with 6:55 left on the clock:

This was Madison Bowey’s first point as a Blackhawk as well.

The Blue Jackets would tie the game again before regulation was over. Michael Del Zotto scored with 2:41 left on the clock. Kevin Stenlund would score 87 seconds later to get the Blue Jackets the lead for the first time since the second period, 6-5. That’s how the game finished.

Notes

  • This is the first time since 1989 that two Blackhawks rookies scored their first goal in the same game. One of those two from the 80s? Jeremy Roenick. Can’t wait to see Ian Mitchell dress up like a leprechaun on national television in 30 years.
  • The passing in this game had multiple good looks for the Blackhawks. Some of the best came on the second unit power play, as the Dominik Kubalik-Philipp Kurashev duo looks like it’s been playing together for much more than just 14 games. Nearly every goal the Blackhawks scored was the result of good passing.
  • Highmore-Hagel had an early penalty kill chance of their own. Too bad both have had struggles scoring so far this season. Both move the puck rather well and if they ever figure out those issues could be dangerous.
  • Easy as one-two-three for Columbus: as the Blackhawks allowed one shorthanded goal, two power play goals and three 5-on-5 goals. Not a great night for the defense or Kevin Lankinen.
  • Speaking of Lankinen, his .860 save percentage was his worst since his NHL debut. He gave up 2.32 goals above expected and three goals on eight high-danger shots against. He also gave up a low-danger goal. Not a great night for the rookie netminder.
  • The Blackhawks were not great at 5-on-5. Again. They had just a 37.56 expected goal percentage and gave up 2.95 expected goals (the most of the season) in under 50 minutes, not helping out the goaltender on a rough night.
  • One of the positives of the night: the line of Kane, DeBrincat and Suter had a 68.96 expected goal percentage. The only other line that played more than two minutes, Hagel, David Kampf and Highmore, had a 73.9. So while the established lines were good, the blender wasn’t functioning./
