Got ‘em sayin, ‘Wow’: Blackhawks 2, Stars 1 in OT

The Blackhawks got their second win against the Stars on Tuesday night with another 2-1 win in overtime. It’s their Chicago’s third straight win, moving the team’s record to 6-4-4 on the season.

The scoring opened in the game’s first five minutes, with Roope Hintz scoring for Dallas. That would be the only goal of the first period.

  • The Stars almost made it 2-0 in the second, but that goal was disallowed because of goaltender interference, as Jamie Benn made contact with Kevin Lankinen./

It took the fourth power-play opportunity for the Blackhawks’ offense to finally click. With John Klingberg in the box for the Stars, Mattias Janmark scored his fifth goal of the season, tying the game at one:

A scoreless third period sent the game to overtime, the second straight game for the Blackhawks and the third of the last four that took extra hockey to decide.

Pius Suter scored off a pass from Brandon Hagel (with Lankinen earning the second assist for his first career NHL point) followed by stickhandle around Klingberg to win the game on this 3-on-3 goal:

All four Chicago players on ice for the game winner were rookies: Suter, Hagel, Lankinen and Ian Mitchell.

Notes

  • The second power-play unit continues to be better than the first. Dominik Kubalik has still factored into the scoring for every power-play goal that’s been scored with him on the ice. It doesn’t look like that will end any time soon, either, as he showed off great playmaking prowess on Janmark’s goal. The second unit finished with 0.26 expected goals to the first unit’s 0.09.
  • Madison Bowey made his debut with the Blackhawks on Tuesday. He finished the game with 10:28 and blocked a shot. He had a team-high 69.98 expected goal percentage at 5-on-5.
  • The Blackhawks went back to the strategy of using seven defensemen in this game. That led to decreased time for the youth, as Lucas Carlsson finished with just 10:37 and Nicolas Beaudin 15:28. Mitchell got a solid look with 18:21, however. He looked great in his minutes and defended well during a third-period Dallas offensive rush.
  • Jeremy Colliton got the young players involved a lot more overall however. The only forward with relatively low ice time was Philipp Kurashev at just 12:41. With 2:33 on the power play, it’s not like he wasn’t given a chance to excel, however, as he collected his third assist.
  • Patrick Kane’s five-game point streak came to an end in Tuesday’s game despite four shots on goal. But a much more dubious streak continued as Kane played his fourth-straight game over 23 minutes, finishing with 24:13.
  • The Blackhawks did not look good to start the second period. They took just two shots through the first 13 minutes of the frame and did not start getting more on net until their power-play goal. They finished the period with eight shots on goal.
  • That contributes to the poor results throughout the game as Chicago had a 46 percent shot share at 5-on-5. On the power play, the Blackhawks had just four shots as well in 6:45.
  • However, the forward line that played the most together — Kane, Suter and Alex DeBrincat — had a 73.95 percent expected goal share in 7:55 together. That line has played productive hockey together in the past.
  • Jake Oettinger was impressive throughout this two-game set, keeping a struggling Stars’ offense in the game. He had a .931 save percentage in this contest, despite the loss. He was also drafted with a pick that originally belonged to the Blackhawks as the 26th overall selection in 2017. The Blackhawks moved back to select Henri Jokiharju that year.
  • Lankinen played well in his first game against Dallas, as he made 34 saves on 35 shots. He also scored his first NHL point on Suter’s game winner. But he gave up several rebound chances that could have been harmful. The defense in front of him did a good job of covering for him on those chances./
