During Monday’s NHL Awards announcements, Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik was revealed as the third-place winner in the voting for the Calder Trophy, annually awarded to the NHL’s best rookie.
In addition, Patrick Kane was awarded a fifth-place vote for the Hart Trophy, the League’s most valuable player award.
Kubalik led rookies in goals this year with 30, good for 17th among all skaters. He had 46 points, third among rookies (but first among rookie forwards).
Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche won the Calder for the 2019-20 season and Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks came in second. Both are defensemen and both are multiple years younger than Kubalik.
Kubalik had zero first place votes (Makar led with 116 and Hughes came in second with 53) but had two second place and 75 third place.
Kubalik was named to the All-Rookie team in the NHL as well.
Dominik Kahun received a fifth-place Calder vote for the Blackhawks in 2019. The last Blackhawk to get multiple Calder votes was Alex DeBrincat in 2018. Blackhawks have won Calder votes in four of the last five years.
Kane came in 17th in Hart voting with that singular fifth-place vote, tied with Tristan Jarry of the Pittsburgh Penguins and J.T. Miller of the Canucks. Kane was the only Blackhawk awarded a vote for the Hart this season.
Kane finished the season with 33 goals (tied for 11th) and 84 points, eighth in the NHL.
Former Blackhawks’ wing Artemi Panarin (now with the New York Rangers) finished third in voting. Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers won the award.
No Blackhawks defenseman was awarded a Norris vote. Robin Lehner came in sixth in Vezina voting.
