This is the End (For You My Friend): Flyers 5, Blackhawks 4

The View from 114

And thus ends an era.

The Chicago Blackhawks lost 4-3 in overtime to the Philadelphia Flyers to cap off the 2022-23 regular season on Thursday night at the United Center, which pales in comparison to the other thing that ended when that game expired.

After a healthy ovation from the UC crowd for captain Jonathan Toews during the pregame introductions …

… the Flyers immediately embraced the role of spoiler by scoring in the game’s first minute on this Travis Koncecny tally:

Konecny scored again six minutes later to make it a 2-0 game:

One minute after that, though, the Blackhawks joined in on the scoring, started by Jujhar Khaira:

Two minutes after that goal, Anders Bjork tied it:

The first period ended in a 2-2 tie before then, in the first minute of the second period, Seth Jones set up Owen Tippett for an easy goal to put Philly back up 3-2:

Oh, what’s that? Jones and Tippett aren’t teammates? Surely, you jest.

Later in the second, Noah Cates scored on the power play to restore the two-goal advantage for the Flyers:

At the 7:40 mark of the period, though, everyone in Chicago got to cheer a Jonathan Toews goal one last time when the Captain expertly guided this pass from Andreas Athanasiou into the net:

Here’s what it sounded like inside the building, thanks to this video from the press box taken by NBC Sports Chicago’s Charlie Roumeliotis:

Worth another look? Sure:

And here’s what it sounded like through the microphone Toews was wearing during the game:

The Blackhawks tilted the ice towards Philly’s end in the final period and were ultimately rewarded with this Athanasiou goal scored at the 18:00 mark of the third to tie the game:

In overtime, a storybook finish nearly unfolded when Toews took off on a breakaway:

Instead, Ivan Provorov scored to win the game for the Flyers and that’s not worthy of a clip here because fuck him.

Notes

  • We’ll talk later. Toews gets the rest of this space:
