Former Blackhawks forward and Rockford IceHogs captain Kris Versteeg scored a power-play goal and an assist, and defenseman prospect Ian Mitchell also had a power-play goal in Canada’s 4-0 victory against HC Oceláři Třinec to win the Spengler Cup on Tuesday at Vaillant Arena in Davos, Switzerland.
Versteeg recorded a secondary assist on Dustin Jeffrey’s power-play goal at 9:02 of the second period. Mitchell then scored with a top-shelf wrist shot at 11:40, and Versteeg added a goal on a five-on-three advantage at 13:09. Jeffrey knocked in his own rebound on a breakaway, and Zach Fucale made 26 saves for back-to-back shutouts.

Canada’s 16th Spengler Cup win breaks a tie with HC Davos for the most by a team in the tournament’s 96-year history.
Rockford IceHogs goaltender Matt Tomkins made 22 saves in Canada’s 5-1 win against host HC Davos on Saturday in his lone tournament appearance. Former IceHog Chris DiDomenico, who now plays for the SCL Tigers in Switzerland, had a goal and two assists in the tournament.
Mitchell will return to the University of Denver for the second half of his junior season. He has 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in 18 games. Tomkins is 4-2 with a 2.66 goals-against average and .912 save percentage in six games for Rockford this season.
