Blackhawks promote Derek King to Rockford IceHogs interim head coach

The Blackhawks promoted Rockford IceHogs assistant coach Derek King to interim head coach Tuesday after Jeremy Colliton was named the head coach of the Blackhawks earlier in the day.

Fellow assistant coach and former Blackhawks player Sheldon Brookbank will remain on staff in Rockford.

The 33-year-old Colliton led the IceHogs to a 40-28-4-4 record and a berth in the Western Conference Final for the first time in franchise history last season.

King is in his third season with the IceHogs. Prior to joining the Blackhawks organization, he was an assistant and associate coach with the Toronto Marlies from 2009-15. The Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ affiliate, advanced to the 2012 Calder Cup Final and won three division championships during his tenure. He also was an assistant for two months during the summer of 2015 for the Owen Sound Attack in the OHL, but left in October .

The 51-year-old King played 14 seasons in the NHL with the Islanders, Whalers, Maple Leafs and Blues from 1986-2000.

The IceHogs are off to a 6-3-1 start to the season and sit in third place in the Central Division.
