The Chicago Steel acquired Blackhawks forward prospect Josiah Slavin in a trade with the Lincoln Stars on Tuesday afternoon. The suburban-based Chicago team out of Geneva also received defenseman Hunter Carrick of Orland Park in exchange for forward Ryan Doolin, draft picks and future considerations.

Slavin, who was selected by the Blackhawks in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL draft, has 10 goals and 28 points in 32 USHL games this season. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound left winger had 23 goals and 42 points in 60 games during his first USHL campaign prior to being drafted. The Colorado College commit is the younger brother of Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin.
“Josiah has made a lasting impact in Lincoln, well beyond the scoresheet,” Stars General Manager Jon Hull said in a release. “His character and work ethic have been our foundation since his arrival here. He has earned the opportunity to compete for a Clark Cup in his last year of junior eligibility. We have a tremendous amount of gratitude towards Josiah and wish him well as he continues his career.”
Steel GM Ryan Hardy also praised Slavin’s character and development.
“Josiah Slavin is a smart, hard-working, veteran player with exceptional character who has been rapidly developing over the last 18 months,” Hardy said.
Carrick has two goals in 20 games this season, and 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 69 career USHL games. The Penn State commit’s older brother, Connor Carrick, is also an NHL defenseman with the Dallas Stars.
Hull said the 18-year-old Carrick being from Orland Park played a role in the trade. Orland Park is about 40 miles southeast of Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, where the Steel play their home games.
“Being from Chicago, we felt Hunter would be a good fit,” Hull said.
Chicago and Lincoln meet one more times this season on Sunday, March 24, at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva.
The Steel have won five straight games after its 4-3 overtime win over Team USA’s under-17 team Monday. Chicago sits nine points back of the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Blackhawks prospect Mikael Hakkarainen (2018 fifth rounder) in second place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference with 45 points. The Steel and Lumberjacks face off two more times this season, with a Chicago home game Friday, Feb. 15, and the regular-season finale Saturday, April 13, in Muskegon, Michigan.
