Blackhawks place Jason Garrison on waivers

The Blackhawks placed veteran defenseman Jason Garrison on waivers less than 24 hours after acquiring him in a trade with the Oilers, Chicago general manager Stan Bowman told the media Monday prior to Tuesday’s Winter Classic.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet first reported the move.

Garrison was part of a four-player deal Sunday that saw Chicago send defensemen Brandon Manning and Robin Norell to Edmonton for forward Drake Caggiula and Garrison.

The 34-year-old Garrison signed with the Oilers on a league-minimum contract after appearing in training camp on a player-tryout contact. In 17 games this season, he has one goal.

Chicago is the fourth team for Garrison in the last three seasons and sixth in his career.

The other 30 NHL teams will have 24 hours to claim Garrison off waivers. If no team does, he’ll be assigned to the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL. The IceHogs close out the 2018 calendar year on New Year’s Eve against the Griffins in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
