Friday’s Olympic action kicked off with the Czech Republic beating Latvia 4-2. Head coach Alois Hadamczik started Winnipeg Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec, who didn’t even dress for their opening loss to Sweden. He responded with an 18 save victory to get the Czechs in the win column. They got goals from Martin Erat, Jaromir Jagr, Jakub Voracek and Marek Zidlicky. Goals from Janis Sprukts and Herberts Vasilievs kept Latvia in the game early before the Czechs pulled away.

Sweden, who lost Henrik Zetterberg to a back injury yesterday, was able to improve to 2-0 with a 1-0 blanking of Switzerland. Daniel Alfredsson scored the game’s only goal with just over seven minutes left in the 3rd period. Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 26 shots he faced while Reto Berra made 30 saves in the losing effort.

The first of the late games saw Finland continue their offensive onslaught with a 6-1 win over Norway. Finland got two goals from Lauri Korpikoski to along with tallies from Teemu Selanne, Jori Lehtera , Olli Jokinen and Olli Maata. Norway’s only goal was scored by Per-Age Skroder, who sounds like a skateboard magazine for boys. Kari Lehtonen made 20 saves and picked up two secondary assists in his first start of the Olympics. Antti Niemi served as the backup and Tuuka Rask was a healthy scratch.
The final game of the day featured a slightly less handsome Team Canada pound Austria 6-0. Patrick Sharp was a healthy scratch and was replaced by Matt Duchene. Canada got a hat trick from Jeff Carter to go along with goals by Drew Doughty, Shea Weber and Ryan Getzlaf. Jonathan Toews had the lone assist on Doughty’s game winning goal in the 1st period. Roberto Luongo stopped all 23 shots on goal. Team Canada really didn’t get to see much from either Luongo or Carey Price in their first two games. It will be interesting to see who Mike Babcock starts against Finland on Sunday. Another story line for the Canadians is what to do with Chris Kunitz. He has no points, two penalty minutes and just three shots on goal playing on the top line and has not looked very good.
