Olympic Blurbs : Upset In The “Slo Bowl”

Before Team USA vanquished the evil Russians, Slovakia took on Slovenia in what I refer to as the Slo Bowl. Slovenia pulled off the upset with a 3-1 victory, their first ever Olympic win. The game was scoreless going into the 3rd period until Slovenia score three goals in just under six minutes. They got their goals from Rok Ticar, Tomaz Razingar and their only NHL player Anze Kopitar. Slovakia got a late goal from Tomas Jurco but it was too little too late. Slovenia has a chance to win Group A with a regulation win over the United States tomorrow and a Slovakia win over Russia.

Sweden improved to a perfect 3-0-0 after a 5-3 win over Latvia, who actually had a 2-1 lead early in the 2nd period before the wheels came off. Sweden’s first three goals were all scored on the power play by Patrik Berglund, Erik Karlsson, and Daniel Alfredsson. They would top off their scoring with even strength goals from Jimmie Eriksson and the recently unsuspended Alexander Elder. Latvia got their scoring from Lauris Darzins, Janis Sprukts and Zemgus Girgensosn. Sweden has won Group C and has clinched a bye into the Quarterfinals.

The final game of the night saw Switzerland shutout the Czech Republic 1-0. Both goaltenders faced 26 shots but Jonas Hiller was able to make one more save than Odrecj Pavelec. The game’s only goal came in 1st period from Simon Bodenmann. The Swiss will finish 2nd in Group C but will not get a bye due to scoring only two goals. They have two 1-0 wins and their lone loss was by the same 1-0 score. Michael Rozsival was a scratch for the Czechs.
