On this date in Blackhawks history: Chicago blows 3-0 lead, but Teuvo Teravainen scores game winner vs. Wild

With the NHL on pause and the World Championship tournament canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Second City Hockey will look back at Blackhawks playoff games since 2010 with an “On this date in Blackhawks history” series.

The Blackhawks blew a 3-0 lead against the Wild, but Teuvo Teravainen scored with 58.2 seconds remaining in the second period for a 4-3 win in Game 1 of the 2015 Western Conference semifinals.

Teravainen fired a quick shot from the left boards high off the right post and into the net for his first career playoff goal.

Corey Crawford held the lead in the third with key saves against Matt Dumba and Nino Niederreiter. Minnesota’s Jason Pominville missed a half-open net when the puck soared just wide left with 2:16 remaining.

Crawford made 30 saves in his first start since Chicago’s 6-2 loss to the Predators in Game 2 of their first-round series. Scott Darling started Games 3-6 against Nashville before Crawford made 13 saves in relief during a 4-3 Chicago win in Game 6.

Brandon Saad, Patrick Kane and Marcus Kruger gave Chicago a 3-0 lead 15:15 into the first period against Minnesota. Duncan Keith had two assists.

Saad put Chicago up 1-0 at 1:15 when he skated down the right side and drove past Ryan Sutter before firing a shot top shelf. Brad Richards side-stepped Marco Scandella at the blue line then sent a pass to the top of the right face-off circle for Kane, who made it 2-0 at 13:11. Andrew Shaw fired a shot toward the net, where Kruger collected the puck and sent a backhand shot through Devan Dubnyk’s five-hole for a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota responded with three goals an 8:09 span in the second period to erase Chicago’s lead and tie it 3-3.

Jason Zuker’s one-timer from the slot cut the deficit to 3-1 at 1:21, then Crawford made an initial save on Mikko Koivu but Thomas Vanek grabbed the puck and sent a backhand pass to Zach Parise for a power-play goal to make it 3-2 at 5:07.

Parise intercepted Keith’s pass from below the goal line and tapped the puck to Mikael Granlund, who scored between’s Crawford’s legs to tie it 3-3 at 9:30.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville kept Crawford in net, and the Blackhawks won their seventh straight playoff game on home ice against the Wild.
