Blackhawks add Shaw Boomhower to training camp roster

Forward Shaw Boomhower earned an invitation to the Chicago Blackhawks’ training camp Thursday after playing for the team during the prospect tournament this past week in Traverse City, Michigan.

Boomhower, who turns 20 on Oct. 31, tallied eight goals and five assists in 25 games for the Mississauga Steelheads in the OHL last season before being traded on New Year’s Day to the Ottawa 67’s. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder added a goal and two helpers in 14 games for Ottawa.

Despite his size, Boomhower is known for his physical play. The OHL suspended him for 12 games in February after he delivered a blow to the head of the Kingston Frontenacs’ Conor Ali. Boomhower recorded 102 penalty minutes during the 2016-17 season with the Steelheads.

The Blackhawks open training camp at 10 a.m. Friday at MB Ice Arena. Chicago’s roster is comprised of 58 players: 31 forwards, 20 defenseman and seven goaltenders. Defenseman Brandon Davidson is the lone invitee on a professional tryout contract.

After the Hawks’ first day of camp, they’ll host their annual Training Camp Festival on Saturday at the United Center. A scrimmage will run from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. General admission for the event is $5.
