Ray Emery had about as good of a season as a backup goalie can possibly have. He went 17-1 with a .922 save percentage and a 1.94 GAA, placing him among the league’s best in both categories. Together with Corey Crawford he captured the Jennings trophy for best goaltending tandem and won his first ever Staney Cup.
The only way to really describe Emery’s season is as a huge blur of W’s. He won 12 consecutive starts, the most memorable being the 45-save win in Calgary, which Joel Quenneville dubbed the most brilliant goalie performance he had ever seen and there was no standout awful performance (he only gave up more than 3 goals in his first start against Phoenix). The big question that carried over from last year; could Emery’s hip hold up, was answered decisively. Emery looked quicker, more agile and certainly more confident than he did in 2011-2012. Everything from his rebound control to his post-to-post movement showed massive improvement.
Alas, now Emery, seeking a larger opportunity, has moved on to the Flyers and understandably so. I’ve argued for a long time that, behind a good team, Emery can be “the guy”, as he proved this past season. I’m not sure how good the team in Philadelphia will be in front of him but at least Emery will get an opportunity and good on him, he certainly deserves it. Farewell Ray. You’ve certainly been a fantastic backup goalie and a inspiration to us all with what you went through with your hip. Best of luck in Philadelphia.
