Opening the next chapter of Second City Hockey

(Editor’s note: It’s possible we’ve emailed out a few of our articles as we’ve navigated this new publishing platform of ours. Those were by accident and we apologize. This one, however, was not.)

Since we made the decision to keep this place going after our corporate overlords cut us loose, our primary focus has been to survive the digital migration, finish out whatever was left of the Blackhawks 2022-23 regular season, take a minute to catch our breath and then begin navigating the countless other logistical things that are now our responsibility.

And here we are.

Before we look ahead, though, we need to pause and offer our deepest, most sincere gratitude. Everything that has happened in the last month was possible because of your support. We were able to pay for our new publishing platform because of you. We were able to pay for our new comment section because of you. We were able to pay for all the necessary legal documents because of you.

And if you’d still like to help us out, you absolutely still can at the link below, with the knowledge that every cent received will not be going to some nameless, faceless corporate entity but instead will go towards the continued existence of this site and/or compensating the people who are doing the work to keep it alive.

And, again, we thank you.

But that’s not the only way you can help us.

When our new logo dropped, we had multiple requests for merch with that new logo on it. And, now, we’re happy to share that we have said merch available for purchase by clicking “Merch” atop the page or the button below:

Having full ownership of the Second City Hockey brand allows us the flexibility to do damn near whatever we want with merch – something we might even be too excited about – so expect more products down the road. There’s also the option of grabbing the latest release of Blackhawks gear from our friends over at BreakingT.

The short-term outlook will see us dive into our review of the Blackhawks season, check in on any prospects who are still playing and post daily game threads for discussing the nightly slate from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. There’s also the draft lottery coming up in just two weeks (it’s on Monday, May 8) and we’re forming plans to have some sort of live content that evening so we can all celebrate – or commiserate – together.

The long-term outlook is for us to continue doing what’s happened in this space since Second City Hockey was created 16 years ago. There’s also an attempt under way to reunite our site with all of our sibling sites that were also abandoned by SB Nation at the end of March but the specifics of that will not be known for weeks, if not months.

With Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews’ Blackhawks careers now firmly in the past, it’s clear a new era is starting over at 1901 W. Madison Street.

So, too, begins the new era of Second City Hockey.

Thanks for being here. We look forward to seeing where this ride goes next.
