The Perils Of Believing In Round Squares: Hawks @ Lanche – Pregame Thread/Preview/Spelunking Expedition

Gametime: 8:00PM
TV/Radio: CSN/WGN
Rocky Mountain High: Mile High Hockey

The Lanche haven’t exactly had an easy season so far. They’re one point behind the Hawks (with only 29 games played) which is good enough for the final playoff spot in the crowded Western Conference. Like the Hawks, the Lanche are dealing with injury problems of their own. Milan Hejduk missed the victory over the Caps on Saturday and Kyle Quincey left the game early, Mile High Hockey isn’t expecting either to return to the line up tonight. Chris Stewart is still out with a broken hand. These injuries could lead our ol’ friend David Koci away from his usual seat in the press box. And if he’s in the line up he might as well drop the gloves with John Scott… which could be an interesting little scrap if you’re into that sort of thing. We all know that Koci’s a bleeder

The Hawks defenders are going to have their hands full in this game – the Avs forwards aren’t the biggest but they are fast and a solid forechecking group. I’m already having nightmares of the shifts Cullimore and Boynton will be getting. The Avs also aren’t having much trouble putting the puck in the net. They trail only Detroit in goals per game. Paul Stastny leads the way with David Jones and Chris Stewart right behind him. The problem for the Avs is keeping the puck out of their own net, they’re ranked 26th in Goals Against/Game. Craig Anderson is falling back to earth after his stellar season last year and is fighting with injury issues of his own, missing time with a knee injury suffered during warm ups and recently missing a few games with a groin issue. He’ll get the nod tonight though.

As for the men of four feathers… things aren’t going to be pretty. Word is that Dave Bolland is missing tonight’s action with an upper-body injury (dammit) after having a few games where he at least appeared to have a clue. That led the Hawks to calling up Ryan Potulny who flew into Denver this morning and missed the morning skate but that’s ok because it’s not like hockey players are creatures of habit or anything… especially not on game days. Marty Turco is also seemingly inexplicably getting the start in net after a solid game from Corey Crawford on Saturday. I haven’t seen any reasoning behind this but if you have – throw in a link in the comments.
