Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw has received a $2,000 fine from the NHL for diving/embellishment, the league announced Friday. The punishment stems from a March 30 game against the Los Angeles Kings, per Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune.
In that game, Shaw drew a penalty on Kings forward Mike Richards that was nullified when the Hawks scored before the power play could go into effect. The league office took notice to the play, however, and Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times says that earned Shaw the fine given it is his second violation.
Back in November, Shaw received a warning from the league for diving but did not receive a fine. Punishments are automatic after the initial warning, however, so Shaw couldn’t avoid the fine after getting called out by the league earlier this season.
Shaw is now the first Chicago Blackhawks player to be fined for diving/embellishment under the rules put in place this season. Frankly, I think one could argue it’s a tad surprising this didn’t happen earlier given how many questionable plays Shaw gets involved in.
James Neal was the first player to be fined for diving this season. Other players to receive diving fines include P.K. Subban, Gustav Nyquist, Cal Clutterbuck and Tom Wilson. Subban has actually been fined twice for the infraction, totaling $5,000.
