Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane was named the NHL’s No. 2 star of the week, the league announced Monday.
Kane, 27, won the Art Ross Trophy in the final week, expanding his point lead to become the first American-born player to win the scoring race. He scored three goals and three assists in three games as the Hawks locked up the third seed in the Central Division. In all, Kane scored 46 goals and 60 assists for 106 points. He is the first player to reach the 100-point milestone since Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins recorded 104 in the 2013-14 season.
Kane’s goal total is a career-high, surpassing his previous 30 goal mark he set as a 21-year-old in 2009-10, the same season he set a high with 58 assists. He’s the first Blackhawks player to reach 100 points in a season since Jeremy Roenick in 1993-94.
New York Islanders center John Tavares was named the No. 1 star, while Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals took the No. 3 star honor.
Tavares scored nine points (four goals, five assists) in four games to lead the Islanders back to the playoffs. Ovechkin scored a hat trick in the season finale for his seventh 50th goal season to win the “Rocket” Richard Trophy, given to the player with the most goals in the regular season.
