The Chicago Blackhawks traded forward Corey Tropp to the Anaheim Ducks for forward Tim Jackman and a 2017 seventh-round pick, the team announced Monday. The minor deal beats the buzzer on NHL trade deadline day to complete a busy week for GM Stan Bowman.
Jackman has been reassigned to the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League, so it doesn’t appear that this move impacts the IceHogs at all.
Tropp was a throw-in to the offseason deal between the Hawks and Blue Jackets that sent Brandon Saad to Columbus. The forward never seemed to factor into the Hawks’ plans and was loaned him by the team to the Albany Devils of the AHL for the season because it didn’t have room with its own affiliate in Rockford. That also presumably explains why Jackman will be heading to San Diego.
In 51 games with Albany, Tropp recorded 11 goals and 17 assists.
With Tropp set to become a restricted free agent this summer, the Hawks instead turn his contract into a late pick in 2017. The pick, while admittedly a minor asset coming in the seventh-round, at least gives the team one more lottery ticket after losing some much more valuable selections by trading a first-rounder for Andrew Ladd and a second-rounder for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann.
Only one player, center Artem Anisimov, remains from the Saad trade. The Hawks traded Jeremy Morin to Toronto earlier this season and Marko Dano to Winnipeg in the Ladd deal. Anisimov, on the other hand, will be around for a while after signing a contract extension with the Hawks shortly after his acquisition.
