Morning Bag Skate: Scott Darling gets contract extension

Well, that was pretty much the worst weekend possible for the Chicago Blackhawks. Lopsided losses to the Colorado Avalanche and Boston Bruins have put some pressure on the team to get back on track, and hopefully we see that this week before things get any more dire. Here’s the news:

**The ‘Hawks made an intriguing move Sunday night by signing backup goaltender Scott Darling to a two-year contract extension. (SCH)

**That deal came after the team promoted Darling and Joakim Nordstrom from Rockford. Antti Raanta and Ryan Hartman were reassigned to make room. (SCH)

**Even after that ugly weekend, the ‘Hawks aren’t pressing the panic button yet. (CSN Chicago)

**Steve Montador was planning to sue the NHL over his repeated head injuries before being found dead earlier this month at the age of 35. According to the lawyer Montador had retained, a lawsuit is still expected to be filed on behalf of the family, though he needs to talk to them first. Sad story all around, and one that should hopefully shine some light on the significance of head injuries in hockey. (Chicago Tribune)

**The Ducks have placed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov on waivers after a rough stint. (PHT)

**The NHL has no plans to create an official replacement for Cap Geek, which is a shame. (Puck Daddy)

**Evander Kane on Buffalo: “I’m looking forward to having a fresh start with a new team and a new city.” (PHT)

**Stars coach Lindy Ruff went off on referees after a late non-call in a 7-6 overtime loss to the Red Wings on Saturday night. (SB Nation)

**The Penguins are reportedly interested in bringing Jordan Staal back to Pittsburgh. It’s unclear how the team would fit his cap hit, though. (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)

**Boston announced Kevan Miller will be sidelined the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury. (Bruins)

**Ryan Miller left the Canucks‘ game Sunday after a bizarre play where teammate Jannik Hansen ran into him in goal. He appeared to be in significant pain after the play and could miss some time. (SB Nation)

**Herb Brooks’ 1980 Olympic gold medal ring sold for $113,000 in an auction. (Puck Daddy)

**Calgary finally sent 2014 top pick Sam Bennett to the OHL on Saturday. He hasn’t played yet this season while recovering from a torn labrum. (Flames)

**Tyler Seguin says “everyone knew” the hit that got Dmitry Kulikov suspended was dirty. (PHT)
