Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane has won his first Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading scorer in points.
Kane, 27, scored two goals and added an assist to ensure the league scoring title Saturday night in the Hawks’ regular-season finale in Columbus. In all, Kane scored 46 goals and 60 assists for 106 points. He is the first player to reach the 100-point milestone since Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins recorded 104 in the 2013-14 season.
Kane joins Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Roy Conacher as the only Blackhawks players to win the award. Mikita won the Hart Trophy, given to the league’s most valuable player, and Art Ross in back-to-back seasons in 1967-68. Mikita won the Art Ross four times in the 1960s, while Hull won the award three times paired with two Hart Trophies (1965, 1966). Conacher won the award in its second year in 1949.
Kane’s goal total is a career-high, surpassing his previous 30 goal mark he set as a 21-year-old in 2009-10, the same season he set a high with 58 assists. He’s the first Blackhawks player to reach 100 points in a season since Jeremy Roenick in 1993-94.
Earlier this season, Kane’s 26-game point streak, which ran from Oct. 17 to Dec. 13, broke the franchise record previously held by Hull (21 games), set a new record for longest point streak by a U.S.-born player previously held by Eddie Olczyk and Phil Kessel (18 games), and also recorded the longest streak in the NHL since 1992-93 when Mats Sundin of the Quebec Nordiques registered a point in 30 consecutive games.
