The Chicago Blackhawks are among teams trying to sign Yale free agent goaltender Alex Lyon, writes Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet in his weekly 30 Thoughts column. Lyon spent the past two summers at the Hawks developmental camp.
Friedman also lists Carolina, Edmonton, Los Angeles and Philadelphia as potential suitors.
Lyon, 23, finished his junior season ranked second in the country with a 0.936 save percentage and first with a 1.64 goals-against average. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound netminder was also a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s most outstanding player. He is currently one of five finalists for the Mike Richter Award as top goaltender.
Lyon, an undrafted free agent, holds several records at Yale, including career wins, single-season GAA, save percentage and shutouts. In all three seasons with the Bulldogs, he went 47-22-13 with a 1.75 GAA and a .932 save percentage.
Chicago currently has five goaltenders in its system: Mac Carruth (AHL Rockford/ECHL Indy), Drew MacIntyre (AHL Rockford), Ivan Nalimov (Admiral Vladivostok of KHL), Matt Tomkins (Ohio State) and Mark Visentin (AHL Rockford).
