Jonathan Toews scored two goals, including his NHL-leading fifth overtime goal, and Marian Hossa had a goal and assist to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-4 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night at Gila River Arena.
Toews’ two goals move him into 10th all time in franchise history and he needs just one more to become the franchise all-time leader in overtime goals. The first tally was also Toews’ 20th of the season.
The Blackhawks (34-16-4) have won two in a row after the All-Star break and remain atop the Western Conference with 74 points. Patrick Kane scored his 31st goal, setting a new career high for a season. Artemi Panarin had three assists and Michal Rozsival scored his first goal of the season.
Corey Crawford stopped 24 of 28 shots for the win, while Louis Domingue allowed five goals on 40 shots.
Hossa looked to have opened the scoring in the first period, but his goal was wiped off after a coach’s challenge. Officials ruled in favor of Arizona despite video evidence showing Coyotes defenseman Klas Dahlbeck pushed Hossa into goaltender Domingue immediately before the goal was scored. It was a questionable call, no doubt, and coach Joel Quenneville was arguing there was a push before contact. When referee Marc Joanette came over to explain it to Quenneville, the veteran coach got right in his face.
Quenneville was given a two-minute minor penalty and Arizona defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
Then the second period was filled with goals. Hossa scored less than three minutes into the period to tie it 1-1, and Toews added a short-handed tally a little more than a minute later for a 2-1 lead. Chicago held the advantage for eight minutes until Mikkel Boedker scored a power-play goal and nine seconds later, Jordan Martinook gave Arizona a 3-2 lead. Less than two minutes later, Kane went five-hole to tie it at 3.
Rozsival scored to give Chicago a 4-3 lead seven minutes in, but Arizona captain Shane Doan tied it four minutes later to send the game to overtime.
Chicago travels to Dallas to play the Stars (32-14-5) on Saturday at American Airlines Center.
