Calvin de Haan did not practice with the Blackhawks on Tuesday due to a “family emergency and it’s unclear when he’ll be back,” coach Jeremy Colliton said.
De Haan did participate in Chicago’s voluntary workouts during Phase 2 and the first day of training camp Monday at Fifth Third Arena in Chicago. He is among 12 defensemen included on the Blackhawks’ 35-man training camp roster.
The 29-year-old had six points (one goal, five assists) in 29 games before he had season-ending right shoulder surgery Dec. 27. Chicago acquired him from the Hurricanes in a four-player trade June 24, 2019.
With de Haan absent from Tuesday’s practice, Olli Maatta moved up to the second pairing with Connor Murphy and rookie Nicolas Beaudin moved from the taxi squad to the first group on the third pairing with Slater Koekkoek. Beaudin, a first-round selection (No. 27th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft, also skated with the taxi squad after the first group’s practice ended.
Beaudin had two shots in 17:01 in his NHL debut March 11 against the Sharks in Chicago. He had 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) in 59 games for the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL prior to his call up.

De Haan is the second Blackhawks player in as many days to miss practice after goaltender Corey Crawford was ruled “unfit to play” Monday. Colliton said Crawford remained “unfit to participate” Tuesday. The NHL is prohibiting teams from releasing medical information in Phases 3 (training camps) and 4 (resumption of play).
Malcolm Subban and Kevin Lankinen were in the nets for the main group while Collin Delia and Matt Tomkins took the ice with the taxi squad. Delia practiced with the main group Monday.

The Blackhawks, who were 32-30-8 (.514 points percentage), enter the Stanley Cup Qualifiers as the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference. They will play the No. 5 seed, the Oilers (37-25-9, .585), in one of eight best-of-five series that will begin Aug. 1 at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Edmonton is the hub city for the 12 Western teams.
The winner will advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, while the loser and the other seven teams eliminated from the qualifiers will have an equal chance (12.5 percent) at the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in the Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery on Aug. 10. The 2020 NHL Draft is set for Oct. 9-10.
