And Still I Wander South: Hurricanes 6, Blackhawks 3

The Blackhawks furthered their losing streak to six games on Tuesday, falling 6-3 to the Hurricanes in the second game of a back-to-back set.

Early in the first period, Alex DeBrincat opened up the scoring with a shorthanded breakaway goal.

Later in the period, Mike Hardman received a pass in the slot from MacKenzie Entwistle, which set up his first career goal and put the Blackhawks up 2-0.

Carolina finally found the back of the net in the second frame, on Nino Niederreiter’s tap-in goal.

The Hurricanes later tied the game 2-2 when Andrei Svechnikov scored late in the second period.

Five minutes into the third period, Svechnikov scored his second goal of the game, giving the Hurricanes their first lead of the night.

Carolina scored their fourth unanswered goal on a shot from Teuvo Teravainen.

DeBrincat scored his second goal of the night, a snipe shot from the point, to bring Chicago within one.

During a Hawks power play late in the game, Martin Necas scored an empty-net goal to seal the win for the Hurricanes. Niederreiter also scored an empty-net goal, resulting in a 6-3 Hurricanes victory.

Notes

  • The first period was one of the best 20 minutes for the Blackhawks’ in quite some time. While it could be argued that the Hurricanes played with their food a bit early on, it’s still nice to see the kids play some quality hockey.
  • Unfortunately, the Hawks’ quality of play would drop off as Carolina scored four unanswered goals. The fourth goal was ultimately the game winner for the Canes. Even with nothing to play for, between struggles with possession and defensive blunders, this game was still more of the same for Chicago.
  • Alex DeBrincat is the truth. DeBrincat finished the game with two goals and came close to a third.
  • Teuvo Teravainen led the Hurricanes in expected goals for with 2.69 across all strengths, along with a 60.98 Corsi-for percentage. Pain.
  • With the Hawks out of the playoff race and at the tail end of the season, there’s not too much else to dive into. Since this is my final recap of the season, I want to thank both the staff, as well as all of the Hawks faithful here at SCH for welcoming me aboard this year. While this was definitely a memorable season, I’m hopeful that going forward, we will be able to celebrate more highs and suffer fewer lows. Until next time, Let’s Go Hawks./
