Blackhawks place Drake Caggiula in concussion protocol

The Blackhawks have placed forward Drake Caggiula in concussion protocol, head coach Jeremy Colliton told the media Wednesday prior to the team’s game against the Golden Knights in Las Vegas.

The Blackhawks official team Twitter account called it an “illness” before reporters asked Colliton to clarify Caggiula’s medical status.

It’s the second time in less than nine months Caggiula has been placed in concussion protocol. He missed 13 games last season with a concussion after a hit from Ducks forward Rickard Rakell in late February in Anaheim. Caggiula had one goal and four assists in Chicago’s final five games of the season once he returned.

Caggiula last played in Chicago’s 5-4 win over the Maple Leafs on Sunday, when he was struck by a puck in the first period. The 25-year-old finished the game with an assist and two shots in 10:22 minutes of ice time. He has three goals and four points in 15 games this season while playing primarily in a bottom-six role.
