Former Blackhawks forward Jimmy Hayes dies at 31

Some sad news to pass along this Monday morning, as multiple media reports have confirmed that former Chicago Blackhawks forward Jimmy Hayes was found dead at his home in Milton, Mass. on Monday morning.

According to The Boston Globe, Hayes death is “not considered suspicious.”

Hayes was a second-round draft pick (60th overall) of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2008 NHL Draft and was traded to the Blackhawks two years later. He made his NHL debut with Chicago on Dec. 30, 2011 in a 3-2 Blackhawks win over the Red Wings at the United Center. In Hayes’ second career NHL game, he scored his first goal.

His stint in Chicago was brief, though, as Hayes played 43 games across three seasons before being traded to the Florida Panthers on Nov. 14, 2013. He also played with the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils in his NHL career, totaling 334 regular season games with 54 goals and 55 assists. He also played in two Stanley Cup Playoff games, both with the Blackhawks during the 2012 postseason.

Hayes’ younger brother, Kevin, was a first-round pick (24th overall) of the Blackhawks in the 2010 NHL Draft but never signed with the team, opting for a free agent deal with the New York Rangers. He’s currently a center for the Philadelphia Flyers.
