The Lights Go Out on Broadway: Predators 3, Blackhawks 2 (OT)

After winning a pair of games at home last weekend over the Red Wings, the Blackhawks fell late to the Predators on the road 3-2 in overtime.

The first goal came on the power play as Dylan Strome scored his second of the season:

The Blackhawks kept that 1-0 lead for the rest of the first period but the Predators tied the game about five minutes into the second period on the first career goal for Yakov Trenin.

Mattias Janmark (not, as Pat Foley called him, Calle Jarnkrok) turned a defensive-zone takeaway into a breakaway goal for a 2-1 Blackhawks’ lead:

That score would hold until the middle of the third peirod, when Mikael Granlund tied the game at two. That’s how regulation would finish, sending the game to overtime.

Notes

  • The Blackhawks’ power play remained hot, scoring on their first opportunity of the game despite the loss of two first-unit members in Alex DeBrincat and Adam Boqvist. Dylan Strome added the Blackhawks’ first goal of the game off a Dominik Kubalik rebound thanks to Andrew Shaw. All three of those names are likely not on the first unit with a fully healthy roster.
  • Malcolm Subban played much better against Nashville than he did in his first Blackhawks’ start this season. That included making 17 saves in the first period and 36 saves on 39 shots overall. Subban is 3-0-2 against Nashville in his career./

  • The Blackhawks got destroyed by Nashville in terms of possession. The team had just a 36.96 percent shot share and 40.99 percent expected goal share at 5-on-5. Their best line was the fourth line, which had a 90.33 expected goal share.
  • Janmark now has a three-game goal scoring streak and has tied Patrick Kane for the team lead in goals (also three). That’s the longest goal-scoring streak of Janmark’s career, all coming at 5-on-5 or shorthanded play.
  • The Blackhawks were at their best on special teams, scoring one power play goal while killing off all five penalties. In 7:15 on the penalty kill the Blackhawks allowed just eight shots.
  • Lucas Carlsson’s first game saw him get 15:36 on ice. He had a shot and a takeaway in that time and played most of it (14:07) with Duncan Keith.
  • Blocked shots were a crucial component for the Blackhawks throughout the game. They blocked 17 shots across all strengths, including three on the penalty kill.
  • Patrick Kane’s five-game point streak came to an end during one of the worst outings of his career. He led the team with three giveaways and did not register a single shot attempt: /
