Blackhawks place Brandon Saad on injured reserve with right ankle injury

The Blackhawks placed forward Brandon Saad on injured reserve Saturday, retroactive to Thursday, Dec. 19 with a right ankle injury.

Saad sustained the injury Thursday when his right leg twisted underneath him after he was checked into the boards by Jets defenseman Luca Sbisa in the second period. He will be eligible to return Dec. 27 against the Islanders in Chicago, but he’ll likely be out longer than that as Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said the forward will be out “couple of weeks.”

The Blackhawks will play six games in the next two weeks, starting Saturday against the Avalanche at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Saad has 19 points (11 goals, eight assists) in 35 games this season. His 11 goals rank second on the team to Patrick Kane’s 19.

Saad joins forwards Drake Caggiula and Andrew Shaw (concussion) and defenseman Calvin de Haan (right shoulder) on IR. Defenseman Brent Seabrook did not travel with the team for a two-game road trip due to “nagging” injuries, according to Colliton.
