Blackhawks prospect Ian Mitchell nominated for 2020 Hobey Baker Award

Blackhawks defenseman prospect Ian Mitchell has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in Division I men’s hockey.

Mitchell has 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in 22 games to tie for 10th among NCAA defenseman. The junior captain currently has six points (one goal, five assists) during a four-game point streak this month. He also leads the Pioneers with 31 blocked shots.

Goaltenders Stefanos Lekkas of Elburn (Vermont), Mareks Mitens (Lake Superior State) and Zackarias Skog (American International College) were also nominated. All three attended the Blackhawks prospect camp in 2019.


2020 Hobey Baker Nominees


Fan voting for the Hobey Baker Award is now live and will run through March 9. Phase two of fan voting will begin March 18 after the announcement of the top-10 nominees. The Hobey Hat Trick finalists will be revealed on April 2 with the winner being announced April 10 at the Frozen Four in Detroit, Michigan.

The Hobey Baker Award

There are four criteria against which nominees for the Hobey Baker Award are considered:

  1. Strength of character, on and off the ice
  2. Contribution to the integrity of the team and outstanding skills in all phases of the game
  3. Scholastic achievement and sportsmanship
  4. Compliance with all NCAA rules, including being a full-time student in an accredited college or university and completing 50 percent or more of the season
