Patrick Kane collects 1,000th career point in Blackhawks’ 5-2 win vs. Jets

The Blackhawks extended their win streak to a season high five games and Patrick Kane reached the 1,000th career point mark in a 5-2 win over the Jets on Sunday at United Center.

Alex Nylander collected his first two point effort since Dec. 19 with a goal and an assist. Robin Lehner made 36 saves, including 12 high danger saves.

Chicago went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and continue to show massive improvements from having the worst penalty kill in the NHL last season.

How it Happened

Chicago got off to a hot start for the third straight game when Nylander buried his first goal in a month at 2:51 of the first period.

Kirby Dach started the play with a between the legs pass to Connor Murphy, who then slid a pass over to Erik Gustafsson. Almost immediately after receiving the pass, Gustafsson wristed a low shot towards the net that Nylander corralled and moved to his backhand. It was a tough angle to score from, but Nylander converted:

At 13:07, Robin Lehner made a huge save on Andrew Copp after Adam Boqvist and David Kampf seemed to miscommunicate, which left Copp wide open in the low slot for a high-danger scoring chance:

A minute later, Gustafsson gave Chicago a 2-0 lead after he faked a one-timer and then wristed a shot through a Matthew Highmore screen and over Connor Hellebuyck’s glove:

In the second period, Lehner bailed out Drake Caggiula who committed three penalties, including an unsportsmanlike penalty for slamming his stick on the way to the box that gave the Jets a four minute power play.

On the resulting penalty kill, Lehner made nine saves and activated beast mode to keep the Blackhawks up by two goals.

David Kampf forced a turnover as the penalty expired and got a breakaway, but he couldn’t convert on Hellebuyck:

At 12:13, Kane drew a hooking call from Anthony Bitetto to give Chicago their first power play of the game. Adam Boqvist and Jonathan Toews had the best looks for the Blackhawks, but Hellebuyck made a few quality saves and one shot even trickled near the goal line. Kane had a one-timer opportunity, but his stick snapped in half.

Not much later, Caggiula took his fourth penalty of the game and third of the period, but Toews and Slater Koekkoek stepped up and helped kill it off.

Kane dazzled with a spin-o-rama move and set up Dach in the low right slot, but Dach just missed:

The Jets got one back at 18:17 after Toews got beat to the net by Mark Scheifele.

As the middle frame came to a close, Olli Maatta made a great defensive play to force a turnover on a potential 2-on-1 from the Jets.

At 9:29 of the third period, Alex DeBrincat made a smooth breakout pass to Dach who drove hard and with tons of speed to the net. Dach jammed the puck towards Hellebuyck creating a rebound for Kampf, who gave Chicago a 3-1 lead.

Then what we’ve all been waiting for finally happened! Kane picked up a secondary assist on Brandon Saad’s goal:

Plus, hockey hugs! What a special moment.

Patrik Laine picked up a goal for the Jets with two minutes to go, but Dominik Kubalik sealed the win with his 21st goal on an empty net.

This is iconic.
