Chicago Blackhawks prospect Stephen Johns suffered a broken forearm during the Rockford IceHogs Game 5 loss on Sunday to the Grand Rapids Griffins in the second-round series of the 2015 Calder Cup playoffs, reports Scott Grodsky of WIFR-TV.
The injury occurred in the second period when Johns took a “really hard spill into the boards,” according to Dan Cohen of WREX-TV. Johns would return from the locker room after being evaluated by the team medical staff, but stayed on the bench.
Johns scored three goals and added four assists in eight playoff games this season. He registered four goals and 17 assists in 51 regular-season games.
Johns, a 6-foot-4, 234-pound defenseman played in 164 of a possible 165 games at Notre Dame, and only the one he missed was because of playing for the U.S. national team. He was sidelined three times because of different injuries this season, his first full professional one.
Johns’ first injury was a concussion in a game on Nov. 26 and he didn’t play again until Jan. 16. Only three games later, he suffered a knee injury and sat out four more games. He missed two more games in March after blocking a shot.
The Notre Dame product was selected in the second-round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
