Shortcuts to Reading Comments

If you’re on desktop, there are several key shortcuts that will make pursuing comment threads easier.

To me, the most useful shortcuts are the C and Z keys which will bring you directly to the first unread comment (though note, Z will mark the comment as read).

If you’re on mobile, there will be a bar at the bottom of your screen with two shortcuts:

  • Next Unread which will bring you directly to the first unread comment
  • Unmark All which will make all comments in the thread as read/

Commenting

The comment box is always found at the bottom of a post’s comments.

It’s typically best to put something in the subject field and in the main box. The subject is automatically bolded when the comment is posted, so try to keep it shorter because it’s difficult to read if it’s too long.

When you’re done writing, you can preview what your comment would look like before posting. After you post a comment, you have 90 seconds to edit it or forever hold your peace.

Format your text:

It’s got all the basics here — you can bold, italicize or strikethrough text and also create a bullet list with basic bullets or numbers.

There is also another option: sarcasm font! Yes, if you want to be sarcastic, there’s a font for that.

You just need to be @ in front of and behind the text you want to be displayed in the sarcasm font. However, sarcasm font does not work in the subject of a comment — only in the main comment field.

Insert a blockquote:

  1. Copy and paste the quote into the comment field
  2. Highlight the quote
  3. Click on the Quotation Mark button

This should automatically surround your text with blockquote tags. Alternatively, you can select the Quote button first and then copy/paste the your quote between the tags, but the other way is less prone to mistakes.

Insert a picture:

  1. Copy the URL for the image that you want to insert — typically you can right-click on an image and select Copy Image Address to get the URL
  2. Click on the Picture button
  3. Paste the URL in the dialog box
  4. Hit Insert

Make sure the URL starts with https and ends in JPG, PNG, or GIF as some other image type are not supported. This function is only for images/gifs that are already online, so can’t upload an images from your own device.

If you want to insert an images not already online, you’ll need to first upload it to a site like Imgur (separate instruction on how to use Imgur are below) or Giphy (but they require account signup).

If you want to resize an image, you can do so by adding in a width or height tag with a desired pixel number. If you only include one (width or height), the other will auto adjust to keep the image proportional, so it’s cleaner to only use one size tag. It’s also best to always preview your image after you’ve altered the size to make sure it looks as intended.

Tags should come before the end carrot with the number changing depending on how big or small you want it to be.

  • width=”500”
  • height=”500”/
  1. Highlight the word or words in your comment that you would like to serve as the link
  2. Click on the Chainlink button
  3. Paste the link in the dialog box
  4. Click Submit.

You can also just insert a link without making any text a hyperlink. Just follow the steps above without selecting any text in the comment. The link URL will appear in the comment in full.

Insert Spoiler Text:

If you want to share something but also give the other poster the option to not read it, you can use spoiler text. It’ll black-out your text to hide it so that another user would have to hover of it to for them to read.

  1. Highlight the word or words in your comment that you would like to hide
  2. Click the Spoiler icon — it’s the black square

This should automatically surround your text with spoiler tags. Alternatively, you can select the Spoiler button first and then copy/paste the your quote between the tags, but the other way is less prone to mistakes.

Embed a Tweet:

This is the only one that doesn’t have a button to auto embed. You’ll have to use the embed option from Twitter directly instead.

  1. On Twitter, click the ellipsis icon / three dots in the upper right of a tweet
  2. Click Embed Tweet from the drop-down menu — this will open a new tab
  3. Click Copy Code
  4. A message confirming the code has been saved should appear
  5. Paste the copied code into the comment — main box, not the subject

This does not work on mobile, so you’ll need to be on a desktop to embed a Tweet in a comment. Below are screenshots walking around the steps.

Replying to a Comment

If you would like to respond to another poster’s comment, use the reply function so that the comment are threaded. Click on Reply at the bottom of their comment, then follow the instructions above for writing a comment. If you don’t hit Reply, your comment will show up at the bottom of the comments and be without any context aka a Waylon.

Users will then be able to back trace comments in a thread using the arrow function. Click Up Arrow at the bottom of a comment and it’ll take you to the parent comment.

Recommending a Comment

Think someone said interesting, meaningful, funny, or just generally like the comment? Click on Rec at the bottom of their comment. After three recs a comment becomes green and the commenter gets to feel all good about himself/herself/themself.

Flagging a Comment

Think someone said that is against the rules of the blog and/or community? Click on Flag at the bottom of their comment. Admins/mods can see how many flags a person has gotten and for what if they ever want to inspect a user’s behavior.

Fan Posts

You can go here for instructions on how to create a Fan Post.

Using Imgur

  1. Click on New Post in the upper left
  2. Drop images in the specified area or select Choose Photos/Video to search your device
  3. Right-click on the the newly uploaded image and select Copy Image Address — Do not click Copy Link because it’s to the Imgur post, not the image URL

You can now insert the image into a comment using the steps above. Most other image hosting sites are pretty similar to Imgur, though some do require you to have an account (like Giphy). Imgur can host static images or Gifs.
