Tim Erixon claimed off waivers by Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs claimed defenseman Tim Erixon off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks, the team announced Sunday. Erixon had been placed on waivers Saturday by Chicago in order to make room for new defenseman Kimmo Timonen, who was acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night.

Erixon, 24, was the lone asset the Blackhawks received from the Blue Jackets in exchange for Jeremy Morin. A former first-round pick by the Flames in the 2009 draft, he did little to impress during his time with the ‘Hawks and found himself stuck in the press box most of the time.

With a contract that required him to pass waivers before being sent to Rockford, it’s unsurprising that Erixon now finds himself in a new organization. The Blackhawks never quite figured out what to do with the defenseman when they had him, and the writing was on the wall once the team opted to play Kyle Cumiskey over him.

In eight games with Chicago, Erixon failed to record a point and averaged fewer than 10 minutes of ice time. In 52 career NHL games between Chicago, New York and Columbus, he’s put up one goal and 10 assists.
