Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane sets career-high for points in a single season

Chicago Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane set a new career-high for points in a single season with his first-period goal against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Kane, 27, leads the NHL with 89 points and ranks second in goals (38) and assists (51). Kane’s goal also ties him with Pit Martin for 11th in franchise history with 243 career goals.

The Blackhawks haven’t had a 50-goal scorer or a 100-point season since Jeremy Roenick in 1991-92 and 1992-93. Kane could reach that feat. He is the overwhelming favorite to become the first Blackhawk to win the Hart Trophy, given to the league’s most valuable player, and Art Ross Trophy, given to the player who leads the league in points, since Stan Mikita won both in 1968.

Mikita won the Hart and Art Ross in back-to-back seasons in 1967-68. Mikita won the Art Ross four times in the 1960s, while Bobby Hull won the award three times paired with two Hart Trophies (1965, 1966).

Earlier this season, Kane’s 26-game point streak, which ran from Oct. 17 to Dec. 13, broke the franchise record previously held by Hull (21 games), set a new record for longest point streak by a U.S.-born player previously held by Eddie Olczyk and Phil Kessel (18 games), and also recorded the longest streak in the NHL since 1992-93 when Mats Sundin of the Quebec Nordiques registered a point in 30 consecutive games.
