World Championships: Blackhawks’ Artemi Panarin, Ville Pokka to meet in semifinals

The Chicago Blackhawks will have four players in the semifinal round at the 2016 World Championships.

Artemi Panarin and Russia will meet Ville Pokka and Finland in the semifinals, meaning Chicago is guaranteed at least one representative in the gold-medal game. Russia defeated Germany and Christian Ehrhoff, 4-1, in the quarterfinals, and Finland did one better with a 5-1 win over Denmark to advance to the semifinals.

Ehrhoff scored one goal in the tournament in Germany’s win over the United States.

Vincent Hinostroza and Tyler Motte advanced the final four with the United States’ 2-1 shootout win over Group A winner Czech Republic. They’ll face Canada, who eliminated Erik Gustafsson and Sweden with a dominant 6-0 win in the quarterfinals. Canada defeated the Americans 5-1 in the each team’s opening game of the tournament.

The Americans win also means Czech defenseman Michal Kempny, who is reportedly “very close” to signing with Chicago, is eliminated. The 25-year-old blue liner had two assists in the tournament. Gustafsson also had two assists.

All Chicago players were held scoreless in the quarterfinal round.
