2016 World Championships: Auston Matthews, USA upset Czech Republic 2-1 in shootout

Auston Matthews scored twice, including the game-winner in the shootout to lead the United States to a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 World Championships.

The U.S. advances to the semifinal round where they’ll play rival Canada, who shut out Sweden 6-0 to advance to the semifinals, at 12:45 p.m. CT Saturday on NBCSN. The Americans dropped its opening game of the tournament to Canada, 5-1.

Tomas Zohorna converted a penalty shot to give the Czechs a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Matthews, who is the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by Toronto, tied the game early in the second.

After a scoreless third the game went to a 10-minute 4-on-4 overtime session before heading to a shootout. Matthews was the only player to score and New Jersey Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid stopped all three shots from the Czechs.

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Tyler Motte had four shots on goal and Vincent Hinostroza had one. Czech defenseman Michal Kempny, who has been linked to Chicago, had three shots.
