Chicago Blackhawks forward Kris Versteeg will be out for ‘about a month’ after injuring his hand in the Winter Classic against the Washington Capitals on Thursday.
Coach Joel Quenneville made the announcement after Saturday’s practice.
Quenneville initially said Versteeg could be out “for a bit” with the injury following Thursday’s game.
Versteeg has 27 points in 34 games and had been playing alongside Patrick Kane and Brad Richards on the PB&K line.
In a corresponding move, the Blackhawks recalled top prospect Teuvo Teravainen from the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs on Friday. Teravainen, 20, ranks second on the IceHogs with 23 points (6G, 17A) and 92 shots on goal in 33 games. He was selected 18th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Patrick Sharp skated in Versteeg’s spot, while Teravainen centered the fourth line along side Daniel Carcillo and Ben Smith. Bryan Bickell, Marcus Kruger and Andrew Shaw were the third line during Saturday’s practice.
Teravainen has yet to registered a point in three NHL appearances for the Blackhawks.
