Blackhawks Patrick Kane named NHL’s first star of the week

Chicago Blackhawks right winger Patrick Kane was named the NHL’s first star for the week ending Jan. 17, the league announced Monday.

Calgary Flames center Sam Bennett and Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar were named the No. 2 and No. 3 stars, respectively. Kane was also named a star of the month for November and December.

Kane and Kopitar led the league with seven points during the week. The 27-year-old started off the week slow with an assist in a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Jan. 12. Two nights later, he was held pointless in a 2-1 win at Montreal before recording his first career regular-season hat trick and adding an assist in a 4-1 win Jan. 15 at Toronto. He capped the week with a goal and assist in a 5-2 victory over Montreal on Sunday to help the Blackhawks match an 11-game franchise-record win streak.

The Hart and Art Ross Trophy front runner leads the league in goals (29), assists (40) and points (69). He is one goal shy of tying his season-high 30 goals in 2009-10. Tony Amonte was the last Hawks player to score 40 in 1999-2000 and Jeremy Roenick was the last to score 50 in 1992-93.
