Brent Seabrook will be in a Chicago Blackhawks uniform through the 2023-24 season.
The defenseman agreed to a eight-year extension, the team announced Saturday. The total value of the deal is $55 million, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, which means the annual cap hit comes out to $6.875 million.
Seabrook, 30, is entering the final year of a five-year, $29 million contract, which carries a $5.8 million salary cap hit. The new deal will go into effect starting in 2016-17 and run through 2023-24.
The star defenseman won his third Stanley Cup with the Hawks last season, recording eight goals in 82 regular-season games before adding seven goals and four assists in 23 postseason games. He was selected 14th overall in the first round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Hawks.
Seabrook was named the team’s second alternate captain, Hawks head coach Joel Quenneville announced during the team’s news conference at the University of Notre Dame. That was a clear sign of the team’s intention to keep him long-term, and now he’s received the maximum term allowable under the CBA.
Seabrook takes over the alternate captain role from Patrick Sharp, who was traded to the Dallas Stars this offseason. Duncan Keith was named an alternate captain along with Sharp in 2008.
