The streak is over.
Semyon Varlamov and the Colorado Avalanche held Patrick Kane without a point to snap his 26-game point streak in a 3-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night at United Center.
Zach Redmond, Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog each scored for the Avalanche for their third straight win overall, and fourth straight against the Hawks (17-11-4). Varlamov made 29 saves for his eighth straight win against the Hawks, and his first shutout this season.
Kane, the NHL’s leading scorer with 46 points, had an assist in Sunday’s 4-0 win over the Canucks to surpass Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby’s 25-game point streak, set in 2010-11 season, for the longest in the league since 1992-93. The winger had 16 goals and 24 assists during his run, and a point in 29 of Chicago’s 32 games.
Kane broke Bobby Hull’s franchise record of 21 games against the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 6, and the point-streak record by an American-born player against the Los Angeles Kings on Nov. 28.
Duchene scored 14:30 into the first period to give the Avs (15-16-1) a 1-0 lead. It was Duchene’s team-leading 16th goal of the season, and the first score Crawford gave up in 155 minutes of action.
Redmond scored his first goal of the season 1:43 into the second period. He received a feed from Blake Comeau, and wristed a shot past Crawford, who stopped 24 of 26 shots in his first loss in four games.
Marian Hossa looked to cut the deficit in half on a shorthanded breakaway. Hossa skated up left boards, but Nathan McKinnon’s back checking slowed him down, and Varlamov made the stop to keep the two-goal lead.
With less than three minutes left in the second, Bryan Bickell also came up short. Andrew Shaw sent a feed to Bickell, who was in front of the net, but failed to elevate the puck on Varlamov.
Landeskog added an empty-net tally.
The Hawks killed off every penalty on the night, but also failed to convert on the man advantage twice.
Chicago returns to the ice when they host the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday at United Center.
