Blackhawks place defenseman David Rundblad on waivers

The Chicago Blackhawks placed defenseman David Rundblad on waivers Monday, according to TVA’s Renaud Lavoie.

Rundblad, 25, has three goals and 11 assists in 49 games for the Blackhawks this season. If unclaimed and sent to AHL Rockford, the Hawks would save $950,000 in salary cap space. $100,000 of his $1.05 million would still count, according to CapFriendly.

If Rundblad clears waivers, he will be sent to Rockford. He can also be claimed by another team, as Viktor Tikhonov was earlier this season by the Arizona Coyotes.

Rundblad signed a two-year contract extension worth $1.05 million in June after recording three goals and 14 points in 49 games. He averaged less than 13 minutes of ice time per game.

Fellow Swedish defenseman Erik Gustafsson, who was recalled earlier in the day, will take his spot. The 23-year-old registered three assists and a 64.2 percent Corsi at even strength in six games with the Hawks this season. He’s been great for Rockford, too, with 11 points (three goals and eight assists) in 27 games. He’s averaging more than 2.4 shots per game, which is among the highest figures on the team.
