June 7th Beard of The Day – Levon Helm

I’m always amazed at drummers who can sing, because I could barely drum when I tried it for seven years and couldn’t imagine trying to sing at the same time.  Not only did Levon Helm do it, but he contributed to some of the most iconic songs in American Rock History.  The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek, Opheilia, and my personal favorite, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is quite the resume.  In addition, Helm was the drummer when Bob Dylan made the revolutionary decision to start playing electric, which was a VERY big deal at the time.

But Levon is more than just the drummer for The Band, though that would be enough, as some of his latest work is his best.  Dirt Farmer was awesome.  Either way, Helm is one of the most recognizable voices in rock.  Now enjoy some of The Last Waltz, as Wednesday is when we drive Old Philly Down.
