Lake Superior State’s Peter Aubry has been hired as the new developmental goaltending coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, the school announced Monday. Aubry will replace Andrew Allen, who was hired as the Buffalo Sabres’ goaltending coach earlier this summer.
“I am extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity with the Chicago Blackhawks. As I leave LSSU, I can’t express how highly I think of Damon and Rich as coaches, people, and friends. Great times are ahead for Laker hockey as they continue to take the program in a new and exciting direction,” Aubry said in the press release. “I will dearly miss working with them, and the rest of the LSSU staff and players.”
Aubry, 38, bounced around various professional leagues during his playing career as a goaltender before moving into coaching a few years ago. Prior to being hired at Lake Superior State, Aubry was an assistant at Mercyhurst, his alma mater, and he’s also been the head instructor at the Shane Clifford Goalie School in Pittsburgh since 2003.
In addition to his role as the Blackhawks’ developmental goaltending coach, Aubry will also be the primary goaltending coach for the the Rockford IceHogs, spend time working with goalies in the ECHL and be responsible for scouting draft-eligible goaltenders.
It’s a significant role, one that Allen thrived in over the past few years, and now Aubry will look to continue that good work. We’ve recently seen Corey Crawford, Scott Darling and Antti Raanta come into their own to varying degrees with the franchise, and while the cupboard is a bit bare now in terms of young goalies, Aubry will be tasked with helping make sure the team is ready whenever it’s time to move on from the current guys along with Hawks goaltending coach Jimmy Waite.
