Patrick Kane shines in Blackhawks’ 3-2 overtime win over Avalanche

The Blackhawks come out of Denver with a big time 3-2 overtime victory against the Avalanche. Patrick Kane pushes his point streak to seven games with another three-point night (2 goals, 1 assist), which included a game-winning goal in OT.

How it Happened

The Hawks started the game off very strong. They earned an early power play, which resulted in some of the best puck movement on the man advantage seen all season. Alex DeBrincat finished off a highlight reel pass from Kane to get to 18 goals on the year. With the tally, DeBrincat is riding a five-game point streak with four goals and three assists.

Shortly after, the Anisimov – Strome – Kane line turned a 3-on-2 into into a backdoor set up for Kane, who scored his 21st of the season. Dylan Strome picked up his second assist of the game and now has three straight multi-point games. Since Strome joined the Hawks, he has seven goals and six assists in 17 games.

Gustav Forsling took a late tripping penalty, which put the potent Avs power play on the ice for the second time of the first period. Mikko Rantanen found some space upstairs on Collin Delia who was screened on the play.

The second period was even until the Hawks took a delayed penalty near the end of the period that gave the Avs an extra attacker. Nathan MacKinnon took a shot from the point that found its way through multiple screens to tie the game 2-2.

Almost immediately after the tying goal, Forsling was penalized a second time for a trip. The Hawks were lucky to get to the third period still tied.

During the third period, both teams had multiple chances that just missed. The Hawks even had a 5-on-3 advantage for 82 seconds that they could not capitalize on. In the middle of the two-man advantage, coach Jeremy Colliton used his timeout to regroup. The Hawks missed a couple chances, and the Avs gained tons of momentum by killing off both penalties. The Hawks were given another chance on the man advantage when Gabriel Landeskog cut Connor Murphy’s lip with a high stick with less than two minutes to play. Since blood was drawn, the penalty was four minutes long.

The 5 on 4 advantage turned into a 4-on-3 advantage at the start of OT. Jonathan Toews used some quick hands to knock a puck out of mid-air near the crease and then slid it over to Kane, who ended the game with a tap in.

A Few Notes and Charts from the 3-2 OT win

  • Collin Delia wins his third straight game this season. He stopped 30 shots and had another impressive outing. He is now 3-0 with a 1.66 goals-against-average and a .957 save percentage. Colliton has a tough choice when it comes to picking the starter for the upcoming Winter Classic against the Boston Bruins.
  • Kane is on a seven-game point streak. Up to 22 goals and 28 assists on the season. Kane is now tied for seventh in the league with 50 points in 41 games.
  • Toews recorded his 19th assist of the season. He now has 35 points and is on pace for 70, which would be the first time he hit the 70-point mark since the 2010-2011 season.
  • The Hawks’ power play went 2 for 5. They have now scored two power play goals in two game straight. They have converted on 7 out of their last 19 chances for a conversion rate of 36.8 percent. /

Up Next

The Hawks head to South Bend, Indiana, for the 2019 Winter Classic against the Bruins on New Year’s Day at Notre Dame Stadium. An original six matchup outdoors will be magical, especially with the Hawks on a roll.
